Maple Glider Soars On The Gentle ‘Good Thing’
Naarm/Melbourne-based singer/songwriter Maple Glider has just released her second single, Good Thing, and it captures that moment in time just before you decide to leave a loved one behind. Maple undoubtedly carries the song with her vocals, with the first section of the song centred around her voice (as well as the sporadic strumming of a guitar), before a slow, brooding drum beat kicks in.
As the instrumentation builds in energy, so do Maple’s vocals, and the peak of the song is truly cathartic. I’m especially a big fan of the guitar licks that are all-too-brief - it’s a song that is much more than the sum of its parts. I’m always interested when songwriters are able to be sparing with what they include in a song because it makes every element of the track more impactful. Trust me, Good Thing will hit you like a gut punch.
Speaking about the track, Maple says it’s a track about letting go before things go wrong. “I like the feeling of my independence and I think I was afraid of putting energy into the wrong people. Sometimes we make decisions out of fear and sometimes it’s because we know that it is the best decision to make. Those lines can get very blurry.” It’s a very vulnerable song, but also a confident one. Sometimes you have to hurt someone in the short-term for you both to thrive in the long term. If you’re in a situation like this, then Maple might just give you the courage to do what must be done.

Check out Good Thing below, but make sure you have a box of tissues handy. The track is accompanied by a video that was made with collaborator/housemate Bridgette Winten, and it captures the beauty of her Brunswick surroundings. It doesn’t get much more Melbourne than this. When Tom Iansek (of Big Scary and #1 Dads) takes interest in an artist, it’s a monty that they’re going to go on and do good things. Getting the tick of approval from both Tom AND my dog (who was captivated by this track)? Maple’s on the road to stardom.
