Sydney musician Allerdyce has just released the gutwrenching Cake For Breakfast, and it’s a track that reminds you to put yourself first. Much like the candles she sings about, Allerdyce’s voice will light a fire inside you, especially if you’re someone that considers themselves a people-pleaser. Allerdyce knows all too well that sometimes, people take advantage of those who are helpful by nature, and Cake For Breakfast is her way of working through that realisation.

The metaphor of having a Cake For Breakfast is a really clever way to talk about her feelings, and as a listener, it helped me instantly connect with her message. The song allows her vocals to shine, and the piano-led instrumentation sits in the background, before coming to the forefront during the outro of the song. Allerdyce counts Florence + The Machine as an influence, and you can hear that throughout Cake For Breakfast - she’s emulated Florence Welch’s ability to constantly elevate her vocals throughout a song. Allerdyce isn’t leaving anything in her locker on Cake For Breakfast - she’s given it her all.

Speaking about Cake For Breakfast, Allerdyce says the song stems from a big realisation during her teen years. “I wrote Cake For Breakfast when I was seventeen when I sort of had this big epiphany about the energy and love I was giving to people that barely gave anything back. I can never manage to write a song without a metaphor, so I played into the idea of saving a cake all for yourself because you know you’re deserving of what is yours.

“I also managed to link it to pyromania and cycling, to keep things interesting. I really wanted to use that imagery, along with an almost movie-like storyline, to express my own character development at the time of writing it and to hopefully encourage whoever’s listening to understand they can save their own Cake For Breakfast too.”

Check out Cake For Breakfast below. I’m curious to see what’s next from Allerdyce because I think this song shows off her songwriting ability in a way that’s undeniable. It’s one thing to lay bare your emotions on a track, but it’s another to filter your thoughts through a metaphorical lens that’s instantly relatable to listeners, but also requires a certain level of unpacking. Stay tuned for more.
