Taj Morgan's Ambient ‘Beauty Sleep’ Will Have You Floating Along

North Coast producer Taj Morgan has just dropped his new single Beauty Sleep, and it’s a track that straddles the line between ambient electronica and cloud rap. I’m a big fan of artists like Lil Peep and Yung Lean, and I can hear elements of their sound in Beauty Sleep. That’s part of the reason why I’m digging this track so much. Beauty Sleep features production/guitar from Taj, vocals and guitar by Henry Collins, and bass from Shane Fleury - and each musician nails their part.

The track is Taj’s first single since his 2020 project dizzy daydream, and I’m a big fan of the guitar at the start of the track, before the drums kick in. The track has a lo-fi aesthetic, which can sometimes feel fake or put on. That’s not the case here. When I listen to Beauty Sleep, I get the sense that there’s something really genuine about the music. Maybe that’s just me, but I find it a really easy track to put on and listen to while I’m letting my thoughts run away with themselves. It’s great music for your next brainstorming session.

Speaking about the track, Taj says it’s a track about danger being at your door. "I think this track captures being in a state of pure euphoria and bliss, whilst being stalked by the threat of impending doom. Don't close your eyes or fall asleep, because you might wake up to a different world." It’s hard to think of a more apt description of the last 12 months - you never really know what you are going to wake up to the next morning.

Check out Beauty Sleep below. There’s more than meets the ear going on with this track, which works in its favour. Subsequent listens unveil more and more elements in the production, and Henry’s auto-tuned, laconic vocals suit the track to a T. I’m looking forward to hearing more of Taj’s production going forward. Long live SoundCloud producers.
