Melbourne hip-hop artist Olive Amun has been spoken about in Melbourne circles for a while now, and now he’s ready to truly take off. His first single of 2021, Blues, is full of quotable lyrics, and a melody that is as catchy as they come. It’s a test of Olive’s voice, and he passes with flying colours. You’ll bump this one for a while, and if you’re from Melbourne, we’re watching an artist grow before our very eyes.

I’m a big fan of the changing guitar tones throughout the track, as they juxtapose nicely against each other. It’s a break-up song, but it’s not one that’ll bring you down. Olive’s voice is infectious, and you might find yourself feeling better about a break-up after giving this a listen. Just don’t “[fuck] shit up”, like Olive laments he always does. Do as he says, not as he does. Probably a good lesson for taking advice from most musicians, in all honesty.

Speaking about his upcoming debut project, Don’t Leave Yet (out May 25th), Olive says those three words inspired the music. “I noticed in a lot of the demos I was making, I kept saying these 3 words… don’t. leave. yet. It was unintentional, but after a while I knew this was the recurring theme and had to be what I base this project off of.

Don’t Leave Yet is filled with self-exploration; musically and figuratively speaking. This was the first time I got comfortable with the uncomfortable and didn’t hold anything back. After about 6 months and 50+ song ideas, I finally had the EP I was looking for. When you play it front to back you really get a taste of everything that I have in my locker. I knew I had so much more to give artistically than I had showcased in the past, and this body of work was the perfect opportunity for me to finally go for it and not hold anything back.”

Check out Blues below. There’s more music to come from Olive in 2021, and he’s an artist that is truly versatile. I’m actually heading along to see him play the launch show for Blues soon, so if you’re coming along, make sure to say hi. There are a lot of high hopes for Olive Amun in 2021, from people in the know. That’s enough for me to say that it’s a safe bet you’ll be hearing a lot more from him very soon.
