Komang Is Lifting You Up With Her New Anthem ‘Flex’
Naarm/Melbourne artist Komang has just dropped her neo-soul single Flex, and it’s one to get you ready to take on the world. Produced, composed and performed by Komang, it’s the follow-up to her 90’s-sounding debut track Dewi, and it’s more evidence that she’s a force to be reckoned with. You’ll get hypnotised by the synth-bassline that underpins the track, while Komang’s smoky voice uplifts you. Australian R&B’s rarely sounded this cool, and you’ll feel like you can move mountains after hearing Komang sing about demi-gods.
Formally trained as an actor, Komang embraced production while working as a performer and writer in the world of contemporary theatre in Jakarta. Flex comes off Komang’s upcoming debut EP Mythologies, which is a love letter inspired by Balinese and Javanese storytelling. It draws from Komang’s return to Indonesia as an adult, and will be released later this year - and I’m excited to hear how her sound unfolds over a full project.
Flex is the kind of track that you play before you go for a job interview, meeting that special someone for the first time, or any situation where you need to bring your A-game. I find myself getting lost in the drums within the production, and if you get a sore neck from bobbing your head along, then join the club. It’s a seriously groovy track, and it’s proof that Komang can weave within musical eras with ease. You’ll be hearing the sounds on Flex more in the future - that’s my bet.
Speaking about the track, Komang says it’s written for her younger self. “It’s a reminder to myself that learning to stand one’s ground and disrupt unbalanced systems looks different for everyone.” It’s a song that'll help you feel more certain in yourself, even when you’re entering unfamiliar territory. It’s hard not to get swept up in Komang’s voice.
