Kinkora's ‘You Got Me’ Is A Reminder Of What’s Really Important
Melbourne-based singer/songwriter Kinkora has just dropped her new single You Got Me. It’s a poignant tribute to her loved ones - both her family and her friends. If you’re a fan of classic R&B vibes (or just love hearing someone with a great voice sing), then you’ll dig her new track. If you just like good music, you’ll enjoy it too.
Kinkora’s lyrics will connect with you on an emotional level, and you won’t even realise it’s happening at first. It’s not a raucous song, but instead, the beauty is in the details. The layered harmonies on You Got Me will work their way into your subconscious and stay there long after the song is finished. It’s a great reminder that as alone as we can feel sometimes, it’s not the case. There are people that want to help us in our darkest moments. We just have to let them in.
Speaking about the track, Kinkora says it’s been a long time coming. “I wrote and recorded the track about a year ago, and filmed the video well before COVID times - so I've actually been sitting on the finished song for some time! It's been really exciting to finally release the song and I'm so grateful for the positive response the track has received so far.
“It's always a weird and exciting feeling when you put out a song - this little piece of yourself that you've been raising and nurturing is kind of no longer yours, and has been set free to make its own way in the world.“ It’s a sentiment I’m always interested in hearing from artists. Kinkora has released a personal song and put it out into the world. It’s up to us as the audience to connect with it in ways that she might not have imagined, but are no less important than the vision she had for the song’s journey.
I also asked her whether the song had taken on a new meaning during COVID - and she says the premise has largely remained the same. “For me, the root of the song remains the same. I wrote the song about my anxiety, how the people around me have been there to support me - and how much I appreciate that. That general sentiment has carried through COVID for me for sure.
“It's possible that people will be able to relate to the song from a COVID perspective though - it's been such a difficult time for so many people, and connection has been one the of the key things that people have been deprived of - so I do get the sense that as a society, connection and support from others is something we have become more aware and appreciative of. “
I think 2020 has made us both more connected and more distant from those around us (I understand that’s a fence sitting opinion). I’ve never been more determined to show love for those who are important to me, because it’s really the only way to stay connected. You Got Me is a reminder to reach out to those around us who we truly love and let them know how special they are to us. If you take anything away from this review, besides how great You Got Me is, it’s the importance of being sincere. Living behind a layer of irony isn’t as fun as it might seem - trust me.

Check out You Got Me below. Kinkora has another single set to be released before the year is out, which I’m very excited to hear. Her songwriting is built around her vulnerable, honest lyrics, something that isn’t always present in R&B music. Music is a team effort, no matter whether it’s a solo project, or in a group setting. Kinkora’s latest single is a tribute to the team members that might be sitting on the sidelines, but are just as important as those who are front and centre when the art is being made.
