INTERVIEW: Chores And LÂLKA Explain How Their Collab ‘Tremble’ Came About
Chores and LÂLKA recently teamed up for their huge new single Tremble. It’s a track made for summer festivals, and while they may not be going on right now, when they come back this song will be HUGE.
It was a song written over email but it’s got the energy of a collab that came about as a result of both artists being in the same room. I’m a big fan of the track, and I asked both Chores and LÂLKA a few questions. They also interviewed each other about Tremble, as well as how the collaboration came to be.
Ben Madden: Firstly, can you both introduce yourselves and your music?
Chores: We’re Chores, an electronic duo from NZ currently based in Melbourne - we make dance music with vocalists
LÂLKA: I’m LÂLKA. I am an electronic music producer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. I make glitchy bubblegum bass music.
Tremble feels like it’s ready for the festival stage – what are you missing most about performing live, and have you thought about how you’d perform the song together live?
Chores: Missing the live aspect, we either do DJ sets or have built a live show where we have a whole bunch of feature vocalists so would one day love to incorporate LÂLKA when we can do shows again.
LÂLKA: I SO miss performing live - feeding off the energy of the crowd, especially when they’re having a good time. If Chores and I ever perform this song together live I’m going to bring 100 per cent energy to it.
It’s a track that feels ready for summer – what’s your summer routine?
Chores: It’s going to be a little different this summer, but usually either a run, gym and then coffee is a necessity.
LÂLKA: I wake up super early in the summer because the sun rises so early. I like to start the day walking my dog along the Brisbane river, and ending the day with a cold glass of white wine.
Finally, what’s next for both of you?
Chores: We have another track from our EP dropping in November, then the next single in January - the whole EP is out early 2021.
LÂLKA: I’ll be releasing my debut EP in 2021 so stay tuned for that!

Chores: When we first hear your sound, it reminded us of bands like Crystal Castles and The Knife – how influential are those bands on your sound?
LÂLKA: To be honest, not a lot. I can see why there’s the comparison though, especially vocally.
Chores: How did you decide which of our instrumentals you thought would fit best for the track, and what made you connect with it?
LÂLKA: I didn’t think too hard about it, to be honest, I just chose what I vibed with. Also, I love the summery feeling of the Tremble instrumental. I gravitate towards music that makes me want to dance.
Chores: What made you want to work with us?
LÂLKA: I liked the instrumentals. It was as simple as that!

LÂLKA: What was your first reaction when I sent through the vocals for the track?
Chores: We wrote a few tracks together, but this one we particularly took an instant liking too, the raking chorus leading into the drops were what caught our attention first.

LÂLKA: We mostly collaborated over the internet – how did you find the collaboration process?
Chores: It wasn’t too difficult, as programs and everything have made the remote collaboration process accessible far before COVID affected the world. The only thing we missed was the energy of being in the studio during those vocal recording sessions and being able to make on the fly decisions and the atmosphere that can bring.
