Melbourne neo-soul artist HANNAH’s I Wanna has one of the most important messages of 2020. The track, which features Melbourne’s JAYDEAN, is all about taking care of yourself. We’ve all gotta look after ourselves, because our dreams give us purpose. HANNAH doesn’t want you to give up on your dreams, no matter your situation.

HANNAH first got people’s attention when she released her debut single, Sweet & Sour, earlier this year, and this track is all sweetness. HANNAH and JAYDEAN’s verses both have a playful energy to them, which the instrumentation amplifies. There’s hints of reggaeton sprinkled throughout the track, and it feels triumphant. I’m a big fan of the rhythm of the track, and how the drums and bassline combine to drive everything along. I hate to use the word groovy - for fear of sounding like a daggy parent - but it’s an apt description of I Wanna. The groove factor is set to 11.

Speaking about the track, HANNAH says, “The track is merely about wanting to escape everyday life, and live up to your best self… releasing that life is yours to design and you can really do anything you want with it if you let yourself.” It’s a message that’s gotten lost a bit this year, but it’s important to remember. We’ve all got one life to live, so why not make every day count - even when that seems hard to do.

There’s something escapist about I Wanna. Daydreaming is something that often doesn’t materialise into action, for a variety of reasons. There's no reason to limit yourself, because at the end of the day, your opinion of yourself is the only one that matters. So much of the messaging we’re receiving from society at the moment is negative. This is partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the divisions that continue to grow within society. I Wanna is a welcome antidote to the chaos that’s currently engulfing the globe, and it has a message I’ve taken to heart.

HANNAH’s only released a couple of singles to date, but everything is trending upwards. She’s got the vocal skills and songwriting abilities of someone who’s released music for a decade, not a few short months. I can’t wait to hear what’s in store next for HANNAH, and you should keep an eye on what’s to come.
