Lebanon-born, Western Sydney-raised artist Chirine has just released her new single You Could Never, and it’s a triumph. It’s moody and brooding, and it’ll descend on your world like a veil, blocking out everything around you until you’re enveloped in her rhymes. The track, which is entirely self-produced and self-mixed, is accompanied by a music video that features elements from the different cultures involved in Chirine’s upbringing, and it’s a direct look into the message she wants to create with her art. I’m finding myself hypnotised by this track.

Speaking to Girl Gang Music in 2017, she says the male-dominated nature of the music industry led her to want to become a producer. “I started to take production seriously last year after realising how male dominated this industry was and that was before I even released a track, it pushed me to learn the ropes and made me want to prove to people that we can do more than just sing.” You Could Never sees Chirine wanting to find someone that’ll appreciate her in her entirety, not just sections of her personality. Someone’s that on their “grown shit”. She’s got no time for fucking around.

I thought this quote from Chirine’s press release strikes at the heart of what makes her music so brilliant. “Chirine exists in reminder of a collective human conscience divinely balancing that which is masculine, against that which is unapologetically feminine, and meticulously her own - to which Chirine lends an unnervingly dark and candid voice to the latter.” Chirine is out her empowering those around her, and I love it.

Check out You Could Never below. Every element of the track has been crafted by Chirine, and it’s resulted in a release that feels unified. We’re seeing Chirine’s artistry on full display, and given that she’s got a project in the near future, you’ll be hearing a lot more from her. You’ll be seeing Chirine blow up in the near future - I’m guaranteeing it. This is big.
