Tasmania-born, Sydney-based dark pop artist Bambi O’Hara has just released her new single, 10:45, and it’s all about being obsessed with someone you can’t have. Bambi’s experiencing disillusioned love, and the track is built upon layers of violins, drums, synths and harmonies. Co-written alongside partner Tim McArtney, the track simulates what it’s like to have someone’s essence pumping through your veins, and you’re unable to drain them out.

Bambi’s vocals sit in a higher register for most of the song, and I think that adds to the dream-like state that the song evokes. It exists above the ground, and you’ll feel like you’re floating as 10:45 pulsates and builds. There’s a sense of urgency in Bambi’s voice. She’s running away from her feelings, and she doesn’t quite know how to deal with them. The songwriting is on point, and it’s a great decision to centre Bambi’s vocals, because they steal the show.

Speaking about the track, Bambi says that she took inspiration from cinema to produce 10:45’s soundscapes. “I’m infatuated with tragic romance and nostalgia. I love blending cinematic atmospheres and trap beat production, with layers of sultry poignant vocals.” There’s also a music video for the track, directed by Sam Brumby, and it takes inspiration from filmmakers David Lynch and Lars von Trier. It feels like you’re watching a dream sequence, and it captures the move-like feel of the song.

Check out 10:45 below. I can easily see this song slotting into the soundtrack of a blockbuster film because it perfectly captures that vibe of not being able to get over someone, and how they consume your thoughts. Bambi’s vocals on the track are definitely the star, and I’m excited for more music in 2021. She’s told me that she’s planning to release a song a month for the rest of the year, so stay tuned for more. You’ll be hearing her name a lot in the coming months. I’m confident of that.
