Sydney-based pop artist Abby Bella May has just dropped her new single Bindii Patch, and it’s an all-too-relatable ode to the destructive behaviours that follow a break-up. Produced and co-written by rising Australian electronic artist Taka Perry, it’s a taste of what the next generation of Australian pop music will sound like. If you’ve ever done something stupid after the end of a relationship, you’ll find comfort in Abby’s lyrics (or they’ll make you cringe upon remembering what those things were). Either way, you’ll feel like you’re less alone.

Bindii Patch might deal with the pain of break-ups, but it does so in a way that never drags on the listener. The production never drags, and Abby’s vocals are upbeat and bubbly. It might take you a couple of listens to pick up what Bindii Patch is truly about, at which point you’ll be hooked. It’s part of Abby’s charm, and why she’s a name you’ll want to keep an eye on if you’re a fan of Australian pop music.

Speaking about the track, Abby says it’s about the cycle that a break-up can cause. She says “Bindii Patch is about the struggle of adjusting to the single life routine after a break-up. It’s all about the stages you go through, including going back and forth from blaming yourself for the break-up and to then blaming them.

Bindii Patch is a metaphor. I thought of it like, no matter how much you know the grass might have bindiis that will hurt you, you can’t be bothered to put your shoes on, so you dive into another relationship knowing you might get hurt again, or you go back to that same person knowing that it’s probably going to hurt again.”

I also asked Abby about how she’d go about growing a garden, to which she says, “I don’t really have a garden but that’s only because I don’t have my own house with a yard yet. So, If I was a garden, in order to help me grow and become a beautiful garden I’d need not only watermelon and mint seltzers but also good friends and fam, people that inspire and motivate me and new experiences.” Editor’s note: watermelon and mint seltzers sound delicious. Great choice.

Check out Bindii Patch below. The track comes from Abby’s upcoming debut EP, I Am Sensitive, which is set to drop on April 30th. I’m looking forward to what the EP holds in store, as I think Abby’s establishing a really strong artistic vision for herself. If you’re a fan of relatable, intimate pop music that captures the pain of growing up, then you’ll enjoy Abby’s music. It’s honest, raw and authentic. What more could you ask for?
