Brisbane pop duo Syrup is back with their second release of the year, and it’s as sweet as anything you’ll hear coming out of Australia. Sun sees Syrup branching out into self-production, and it suits them well. Close your eyes while listening to the track, and you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re on a beach with a pina colada in hand.

Syrup is made up of childhood friends Harry Pratt and Henry Anderson, and the track feels like it comes from another time, and another place. 2020 certainly isn’t the happiest year that we’ve had as a collective society, but it’s interesting to see that pop music, at least to my ears, is currently trending torwards some happier, tropical sounds. Pop music can often be escapism, and Sun makes me think I’m somewhere far from where I am now.

Speaking about the track, Harry says, “By the time the writing of the song was finished I found that the production directly swam alongside and parallel to the song without crowding it, infringing on it or being generally too busy. I find that's an absolute rarity for me when producing. You want the song to breathe and have space...

“I wrote this song just after jumping out of a pool, I was in boardshorts and grooving along to the congas, it just felt right. I was conscious that the production gave that summer-esque vibe instantly and for that reason alone I was stoked. I wanted to push this song to the musical perimeter and I feel so privileged to be given that rare, rare opportunity.”

The song’s star is definitely the bassline, which feels like it could cause a rush to the dancefloor anywhere in the world. Sun is a step up for the duo, both from a production standpoint, and as a vocal performance. Every element of this song is designed to induce some serious brain chemicals, and if you’re able to resist, then you’re far stronger than me.

Check out Sun below. If you’re somewhere where the temperature isn’t rising as fast as you’d like, or you’re stuck indoors for the time being (like me), then this track is a welcome escape to a different climate.
