Sunday Sessions - 11th of October
The more and more the days roll on, it’s starting to feel like summer. I was convinced that this year would get better when summer hit. It remains to be seen whether that’ll be the case. Time continues to pass both slowly and at the speed of light - depending what day of the week it is. I’m enjoying freelancing as much as I am, and I’m enjoying running this blog. I think it’s given me a sense of purpose.
There’s been a lot of conversation about a couple of things to do with Australian music and Australian music media, and I thought I’d address both. Firstly - the role of Australian music media. I think that Australian music media isn’t in the strongest place it’s ever been, and that’s ok. There are some great Aussie writers out there, but they’re not always given a voice. Do people deserve to be given a platform to write? I think there’s a lot to be said for trying untested writers every now and then. It’s part of taking care of the next generation.
On the other hand, I think the most important thing for the growth of a new writer is a good editor. You can’t give a writer a shot without guiding them through the article-writing process, and I think there needs to be more commitment to nurturing new writers. This is something I’m trying to do more myself, but it’s an approach that needs to be taken industry-wide.
The other thing I wanted to talk about was how music in Australia is discovered. I find myself looking through triple j unearthed more and more these days, and there really needs to be a crackdown on artist profiles. Your unearthed profile is a great way to be discovered - so tell people about yourself! By the same token, unearthed shouldn’t be the only way to discover new music. I’m joining more and more groups on social media to try and find out what people are talking about. I’d love to chat to people about how they go about finding music.
Without further ado, here are the articles I wrote this week. I spoke to Yelderbert about the importance of talking care of your mental health, and BATTS about space. I also reviewed tracks from mlky, T$oko, Love Level and Lucy Korts. It’s been a busy week, but a fun one. My dog is staring at me while I write this - such is the life of a dog.
