Sydney singer/songwriter Sarah Wolfe has just released her latest single, I’ll Never Be Happy Again, and it captures that post-break-up feeling. It’s very much a polished pop song, but it’s got a punk rock energy to it. You’ll get whiplash from the way it transitions from soft vocals to screaming, but neither feels out of place. In reality, that’s exactly what dealing with a break-up feels like.

I’ll Never Be Happy Again track ventures beyond the typical pop-punk tropes in how it incorporates punk elements, which I really enjoy. Pop-punk can often infantilise emotions, whereas I’ll Never Be Happy Again gives Sarah a canvas to explore the ways her break-up impacted her. Not everyone experiences the ending of a relationship in the same way, and Sarah begins to doubt herself. She wavers on whether her personality is palatable to those around her - before ultimately vowing to be herself.

Speaking about the track, Sarah says, "I’ll Never Be Happy Again is one of the first songs I wrote where I finally felt comfortable in my own sound. It is loosely about a relationship that went wrong, but the more overarching theme for me is anxiety; how my head always makes things out to be far worse and far more dramatic than the situation actually is.

“I love how the lyrics play out over such a high energy soundtrack, I wanted this to be the point of hope in the song, a reminder that things do usually end up being ok. This song is as ridiculous as my own fears are sometimes!" If you’re not feeling an adrenaline rush after listening to this song, then you’re clearly not listening closely enough. It’s the audio equivalent of sculling a few Red Bulls one after the other.

The song also talks about anxiety, something that’s becoming more and more common in music. We’re in an age where people are more comfortable than ever expressing their true emotions through their music. There’s no need to put on a facade anymore - something that’s increasingly being reflected throughout society at large. It’s well overdue, and long may this continue.
