Sydney-based rock duo Salarymen have just dropped their latest track Something To Me, and it’s the perfect song for your next existential crisis. Made up of Renee de la Motte and Thom Eagleton, the band draws from pop, psych, rock and folk to craft songs that' If you’re a fan of post-punk synths and guitar riffs that’ll knock your socks off, then you’ll want to give this track a listen.
When I listen to Something To Me, a sense of serenity washes over me - it’s the comforting hug that we have been missing for so much of 2020. Their guitar tone reminds me of bands like The Ocean Party and Dick Diver, which in my mind is one of the highest compliments you can pay a rock band. All the elements of a great rock song are present on Something To Me, and they make for a captivating listen. You’ll want to have this song on repeat.
Speaking about the single, lead singer/guitarist Thom says it' was written after a band that he’d invested his heart and soul into broke up. “This song is a bit of an anthem for any musician going through an existential crisis. It’s about questioning whether you should continue on with a dream you’ve been chasing for years, and almost giving up.
”After a band that I’d given so much to financially and personally broke up very abruptly, I felt an immense sense of pressure to throw the towel in and get a ‘real’ job, and I wrote this track shortly after about how crucial music is to my life. Ironically, such dark moments can also be some of the most inspiring musically.” If you’re currently chasing a dream, but you’re finding yourself at a crossroads, this song may give you the guidance you need.
It comes with a music video directed by Todd Stephen Logan, which features Thom and Renee in a modern adaptation of Frankenstein. You’ll have to watch it to catch how the story plays out, but it shows that the band is just as comfortable in front of a camera as they are in the studio, and they’ve got some serious star power.
