Melbourne rapper Martian sounds at home when he’s rapping about staying positive, and it’s easy to get caught up in the wave. It’s a track about simpler times in one’s life, and you’ll find yourself reflecting on the past with a sense of wistfulness (or embarrassment - but that’s all part of the fun). If you’re a rapper that’s just starting to get into the music industry, it’s worth taking a look at how Martian markets himself. He’s able to wear many, many hats, and navigates the industry in a way that allows him to do things on his own terms. It’s inspiring, and an approach that can teach people a lot about what it means to be a musician.

The track’s chorus, sung by Queen Ali, gives the track a sense of breeziness, and this is replicated by Martian’s bars. Each lyric bounces off the last, and you’ll find yourself within the world he’s creating with each bar. He’s able to be both personal and relatable in equal measure, which is a balance that a lot of rappers are constantly chasing. If you’ve ever been in a situation that makes for a great story afterwards, or felt like you’re on top of the world, then Memory Lane will transport you back to those days. Music makes for some strong memories, and even though I’ve never heard this song before, it’s easy to get lost in your thoughts while this song plays, and then you’ll want to spin it again.

Speaking about the track, Martian says he’s feeling back at his best. “I think I got caught up in all the styles that were popping and wanted to prove to myself I could do them too. And yeah I showed I can rap with the best of them but at the end of the day I’m best at where my heart is, in that weird happy, energetic bubble.” Martian’s happy to play the game by his own rules, and that’s when he’s at his best. He’s competitive, but he’s also self-motivated. It’s a winning combo.

Check out Memory Lane. If you’re heading on a drive somewhere, wind the windows down and let this play while the wind blows in. Your worries might just be carried away. Martian’s always got something bubbling, so I suspect we’ll be hearing a lot more from him in the near future. If you’re ever wanting to wander down Memory Lane, let this song serve as the soundtrack, while you reminisce on days and nights past. You might even find yourself reaching out to people you haven’t spoken to for a while - after all, if there’s any year to do it, it’s this one. Strange how our priorities change.
