Egyptian-born, Australian-based R&B artist Mariam Sawires has just released her new track Meaning Of Our Love, and it’ll make your heart soar. The track was originally written back in 2018 in a French castle, and the track captures the untold stories of the crevices in such a large building. If you’ve ever wondered what stories walls could tell if they spoke, then you’ll want to give Meaning Of Our Love a listen. Mariam is giving a voice to the rooms that have collected centuries’ worth of stories.

If you’re a fan of artists like Jorja Smith or H.E.R, then you’ll be drawn to Mariam’s vocals. The track’s production gives her the room to shine, and her vocals are undoubtedly the centrepiece of the track. Despite sounding contemporary, this track definitely has a timeless feel to it. I think that’s, at least in part, inspired by the environment where the song was originally envisioned. Throughout the track, Mariam is searching for “balance and peace” in her relationship, and she’s calling to the universe to help her out.

Speaking about the track, Mariam says, "In the fast-paced world of 2021, I contemplated on what really matters and what remains fulfilling in this ever-changing world. I was fascinated by the stories of people who had lived in the castle from the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s compared to now - stories of love and relationships that were innately similar to us today yet it was a different time. Ultimately I realised that the experience of love is unique for everyone but the essence is still very much the same - it envelops a deeper timeless spiritual realm."

Check out Meaning Of Our Love below. I think Mariam is making music that draws from a range of influences, ones that you don’t necessarily see make their way into R&B music. Those influences, like learning traditional Arabic rhythms from her professional tabla-playing father, give her a wider scope from which to inspire her next song. I’m excited to see where she takes her sound next because it really could go anywhere. Keep your eyes and ears peeled.
