LAKSHANE's ‘Ariana’ Might Have You Triple-Texting
Melbourne R&B crooner LAKSHANE has just released his latest track, Ariana, and it’ll have you reaching out to that person that lives in your head rent-free. The centrepiece of the track is definitely LAKSHANE’s vocals, and he hits every note with ease. The pain that he’s singing about hits home, to the point that you’ll feel like you’ve got an Ariana of your own in your life, even if you don’t. It’s amazing to me that people in Melbourne are making music like this because it wouldn’t be out of place on the OVO roster. Is Melbourne becoming the new Toronto?
More and more, Australian artists are making music that fits into the global music landscape. It’s an interesting phenomenon, because traditionally I’ve felt Australians have been obsessed with finding our “own” sounds, while still taking influence from artists overseas. One of the things I really like about Ariana is the fact that it shows Australian artists can mix it with anyone in the world. You’d struggle to convince me that this would sound out of place on an album by the Weeknd or Drake. LAKSHANE’s got “it”. Ariana is a reference to snow, similar to beibs in the trap by Travis Scott. The song describes a situation of being under the influence post-breakup, feeling like I’m on an ‘island’ where I’m hopeless because I can’t physically reach her. I try to blackmail her by saying ‘don’t let me drive’, hoping she’d come save me.” Obviously, don’t actually do that, because it’s manipulative - but Lakshane makes it sound endearing, in a way…

Check out Ariana below. There’s a smoothness to Lakshane’s vocals that hits just right, especially if you’re listening to the track after the sun goes down and you’ve had a bit to drink. However, at that point, you’ll probably want to hand your phone over to someone that you trust, because you don’t want to be texting someone you shouldn’t be. Otherwise, the lyrics might hit too close to home next time you listen to this track. Triple-texting seems a great idea in theory, but in practice, probably not so much.
