Melbourne pop artist Fake Hudson has just released his new single Tied UP, and it’s a slick slice of sultry singing. Taking influence from King Krule, James Blake and more, Fake Hudson’s voice is captivating. It sounds like it contains wisdom beyond its years, and rather than ask you to listen - it has a demanding quality. Chuck on Tied UP, and it’ll wake you up. It’s that kind of song.

The almost-glitchy production of Tied UP weaves between raw and polished, and it gives the song a gleam that makes it stand out. Fake Hudson’s voice can shine because of the production, rather than despite it. I found myself nodding my head along to the track, which is surely a sign that he’s doing something very, very right.

Speaking about the track and its origins, Fake Hudson says, “Sonically this song was all produced and mixed by me. I've been trying to focus on blending the great hip hop producers of the early 2000s with an alt-pop singer songwriter vibe. I was trying to blur a line between hip hop and alternative pop while still retaining quite a big sound.

“Lyrically the song deals with devotion. Feeling a bit like you're more devoted to your partner than they are to you. The song paints images of how that sits and how that can lead to feeling subservient or lesser than. “ It’s an empowering song - don’t let yourself be taken advantage of. Stand up for yourself - it’s what Fake Hudson wants.

One thing’s for certain - if I sounded like Fake Hudson, I’d become a musician too. Unfortunately, I don’t, so I can only marvel at the music people like Fake Hudson are able to make.
