Sydney artist Chelsea Warner has just released her first single of 2021, Drama, and it blends R&B and alt-pop while shining a light on the ways young adults face complications in their personal life. Chelsea’s vocals are the highlight of the track, and she’s sounding more confident than ever with every note. I think the song is a reminder that the human psyche craves Drama sometimes, even if people want to pretend they don’t. Chelsea’s not afraid to explore that side of herself, as a way of dealing with those feelings, and processing them. It’s a very self-reflective track and one that might apply to the period of your life that’s currently playing out.

There’s an extra layer to the song though, at least in my mind (maybe I’m stirring up Drama)? Teenage girls are the backbone of the music industry, yet their role in tastemaking is often reduced to nothing. This song is a great reminder of the stereotypes that exist about young women within music, and I see it as Chelsea reclaiming those toxic stereotypes that the music industry, and musicians, love to push to suit their narratives.

Speaking about the track, Chelsea says, “Drama was written about a side of myself that I don't like; one that craves attention and loves tension. Written in the haze of adolescence, it's an ode to the stereotype of the dramatic teenage girl and how it makes young women feel about their own emotions.”

Check out Drama below. The song is accompanied by a video filmed in conjunction with videographer Kezia Suryaputra, which captures Chelsea’s ability to play the villain. It’s a great accompaniment to the track because it illustrates exactly what Chelsea’s singing about. Sometimes, we give into the side of us that just wants to start spot fires around us. In those situations, it’s the only way we can keep warm.
