Buddy Ryan Gets Out The Flamethrower On ‘Canary Gold’
American-born, Melbourne-based rapper Buddy Ryan is one of the voices of Australia’s underground, and his new single Canary Gold sees him landing punch after punch. It’s a new sonic direction for Buddy, with the soulful sounds he’s known for replaced with rattling, frenetic drums and vocals that’ll get you feeling like you’ve just run a marathon.
Buddy’s flow on the track is energetic, and it’ll get the adrenaline pumping through your veins. It’s a new Buddy, and while 2020 has been a tough year for all, creatives included, it’s given him time to work on his craft. The result is an elevated pen game, as well as vocal delivery. Buddy’s bringing all the skills he’s worked in in 2020 to the fore, ahead of a mixtape release in early 2021.
Speaking about Canary Gold, and the shift in direction, Buddy says he’s made the most of 2020. “This is one of the many songs that I’ve been holding onto. During lockdown, I’ve been in a really sweet, creative place. The songs on this project are more upbeat and come with major energy. Canary was one of the first songs I made that pushed me to release these demo tracks.
“Canary Gold is about levelling up. “Stepping stone, get your camera phone. Everything in gold.” It’s funny because the hook really summarises how I felt in quarantine. I felt like I owed it to the people who support me to step it up a notch. This song is just the spirit of the night I recorded the song.” It’s a tribute to those who have always had Buddy’s back and have allowed him to truly be himself. He wouldn’t be where he is today without the real ones by his side.
