PREMIERE: Pipin's Lush New Single Will Have You ‘Breathing Love’
Brisbane singer/songwriter Pipin is getting ready to release her new single, Breathing Love, and I’m excited to be premiering the track right now. It captures the transition between adolescence and adulthood, and the complex emotions that accompany that period in everyone’s life. It’s a track that’s reminiscent of the lush, layered production that was a staple of artists like Cocteau Twins and KT Tunstall, and you’ll find your ear drawn to different aspects of the track with repeat listens.
I really like the balance of blending the hazy, kaleidoscopic guitars that are a staple of shoegaze with Pipin’s emotive, floaty vocals. They’re raised high in the mix to make them stand out, and this song sounds more organic than the digital aspects of her previous singles. Let yourself get lost in the instrumentation of the track before Pipin’s vocals puncture the dream-like state the guitars lure you into. This is a song to pay attention to, because there are so many elements that come together to make it tick.
Speaking about the track, Pipin says, "I normally really mull over the lyrics before coming up with a final copy that's gone through rigorous fine-tuning, so it was really freeing to write something so quickly. Breathing Love is about being filled with positive emotions, energy and love and wanting to share that with others, but not being sure if it’s going to be reciprocated.
“The last line of the chorus reads 'but are you gonna zap me?' – it’s that feeling of wondering whether you’re putting all that energy into people and relationships in your life only to have that love 'zapped' from you instead of given back." Sometimes, you have to take time for yourself and recharge, rather than giving people all of your energy. It’s a balance that’s hard to find, but that’s just part of life’s journey.

Check out Breathing Love above. The track is the second single from her upcoming debut EP Your Time Is Your Own, which I think is a really important mantra. Every now and then, we all need a reminder to take a deep breath and be ourselves for a little while. I don’t know what that looks like for you, but for me, it’s writing, hanging out with my girlfriend, and playing with my dog. We’ve all got to unplug sometimes, don’t we?
