Canberra pop artist Lucy Sugerman has just released her third single, golden boy, and it’s a break-up track that’s bringing the heat. There are some seriously vicious lyrics in this track, which makes it the perfect response to an ex that’s done you wrong. It’s set to feature on her upcoming debut EP, out later this year, and it’s the first pop track I’ve heard this year comparing an ex to a bleached arsehole.

Golden boy is a break-up song that doesn’t leave you feeling sorry for Lucy. Instead, you’ll be invigorated by her energy and clarity after the break-up. She’s not feeling sorry for herself, quite the opposite. Instead, she’s belting out a song about how her ex doesn’t pay rent and is still on “daddy’s paycheck”. I wouldn’t want to be the subject of this song, because it’s catchy as all hell, as well as searing. Imagine hearing well-written insults like the ones featured in golden boy when you’re out!

Speaking about the track, “I was pretty fired up when I wrote It. It’s the first song from this project where the depreciation lands on someone other than me! I think for me, golden boy captures that stage of the breakup process where you’re angry as a coping mechanism, and trying to focus on the bad side of a relationship as a method of moving on.

“I know writing it was super cathartic and a huge emotional turning point for me. Regardless of who’s right or wrong, I hope all my fellow heartbroken and jaded people can relate and have a little chuckle about their decisions in love and things they put up with too.”

Check out golden boy below. The video for the track is inspired by Lucy’s Vietnamese heritage, as well as the 60’s and 70’s. I’m really excited to see where Lucy’s debut EP takes her sound because there’s limitless potential displayed in this track.
