Melbourne electronic duo LEFKADA (stylised as LEFKΛΔΛ) have just released their new single, The Curator, and it’s a deep dive on how influencers and social media are playing a bigger role in society than ever. Consisting of Tim Cox and Selene Messinis, the duo have worked with artists like Woodes and NO ZU, and I haven’t really heard anything like The Curator before.

Their sound draws influence from genres like jazz, R&B and hip-hop, and it all comes together in a package that’ll have you bopping along, before you listen to the lyrics and trying to work out your stance on influencers. Probably best to save that second part for when you’re at home, rather than out partying.

It’s a track full of bass-driven synths and 808 claps, but the highlight is definitely Selene’s vocals. I’m also really digging the harmonies on the track. This one is a bit glitchy, a bit upbeat, and whatever sounds you like in the electronic realm, you’ll find something you dig on this track. The drop is one of the best I’ve heard this year so far, and it hits just right. If you’re a DJ, you really should slot this into your next set - it’ll be one that catches the crowd by surprise, but once the drop hits, it’ll go off.

Speaking about the track, the band says, “The Curator is inspired by our fascination with “influencers”; we’re always wondering what their lives are truly like behind the veil of social media. Online, they meticulously curate their personal brand and image, so that their lives appear in perfect snapshot moments, which are usually never as perfect as they seem…” It’s an interesting point, and one I think about a fair bit. How many people in an influencer’s audience are buying into their narrative, versus suspending disbelief? It’s a question I don’t have an answer to, but I’d love your thoughts.
