Imbi And Slim Set Have Teamed Up For The Sweaty ‘Heatsink’

Sydney artists Imbi and Slim Set have teamed up for the banging Heatsink, a track that calls to mind UK drum & bass. The track is the debut release for Pointer Recordings, a new artist-friendly digital-only label imprint of Remote Control Records. If you’re missing those nights spent at the club, letting the hours pass you by, then Heatsink will take you there. This song flies along at a mile-a-minute, with Imbi bringing respite in parts. Overall, though, there’s a risk that this song is going to give you whiplash - so it’s time to protect your neck.

The first thing you’ll hear when you put this track on is Imbi’s floating vocals. Make no mistake, they’re a bit of a false dawn. This song revels in the roughness, and while Imbi’s vocals glide all over the track, Slim Set MC Kal’s bars ground the track. The phrase ‘filthy banger’ gets thrown around a bit, but it truly applies here. This is dirty, and it’s glorious.

Speaking about signing to Pointer, imbi says, "Pointer came at the perfect time! Joining up with Pointer reassured me that there are ways to pursue music that feel good and labels out there really looking to do best by the artist and themselves. I am so grateful to be part of this team!” Go check out Pointer Recordings’ roster if you have the chance - I can’t wait to hear what else they’ve been cooking up.

Check out Heatsink below. 2021, like 2020, is proving to be a huge year for dance music, even with the restricted opportunities to dance. Given the way that UK genres like drill and garage have taken off in Australia, I am surprised that D&B hasn’t taken off in the same way. Maybe this is the year.

There’s also a game based on the track, coded by Slim Set’s Atro, and illustrated by Alvin Ruiyuan Zhong. The game sees you try to find your way from Parramatta Station to Sydney’s CBD, and it’s a side-scrolling platformer. Let me know if you beat the game - I wasn’t able to when I played it.
