DM219's ‘W8’ Will Get You Feeling Emo In The Mosh

Sydney duo DM219 have just dropped a new track, W8, and it’s the moody trap anthem that you’ve been looking for (and even if you haven’t, it’ll hook you in). Made up of producer B and vocalist/producer DM219, the pair have worked together making a couple of different genres of music, before DM219 had some stuff to get off his chest. He felt that a shift of genre would allow him to better express himself, and that’s resulted in tracks like W8. They’ve sporadically released tracks over the last couple of years, and W8 is the result of a friend pushing them to upload the track to streaming services. I’m really glad that friend gave them the push, because this song is absolutely doing it for me. If you’re a fan of Lil Peep, Juice WRLD or any other artists that make sad/emo rap, then you’ll love what DM219 are laying down.

The popularisation of emo-rap over the last decade has been extremely fun to watch, and it’s interesting that DM219 sound right at home in the genre given they’ve previously made EDM/future bass. I think that speaks to the fact that emo rap, at least to me, is a very “intuitive” genre. A lot of people grew up listening to emo/pop-punk music, and core tenets of those genres (sliding guitars, a driving drum beat, melodic vocals) can be found in emo-rap. After all, rappers are the new rockstars - there’s not really any denying that. I’d love to mosh to this track, because it sounds like it’d absolutely go off.

Speaking about the track, DM219 tell me that it’s about 2 people that want to be together - but it’s not good for either of them if they are. “W8 is about 2 people who love each other but just shouldn’t be together. They both do everything they can to hold onto the relationship because the thought of losing one another is death. But in the end, they have to let it go, moving on with their lives and their time together being just a distant memory of the past. So the track’s called W8 because it’s 2 people waiting for something that will never happen.”

Check out W8 below. Feeling a bit down? Put this song on, and let your sadness flow through you. It’s a bit of a weird thought, but that’s what this music was made for, in my opinion - feeling less alone in your thoughts. The track’s rolling hi-hats pair perfectly with the vocals on the track, and it makes for a song that you’ll want to replay again and again. DM219 are going to turn some heads in 2021, and I’m here for it. This track has melodies in spades, and you’ll want to absorb them into your brain. Let the world drift away, and feel the beat flow through you. It’s cathartic.
